Arts Center - Reading Local, The Poetry of Michael Torres
ZOOM CLASS

READING LOCAL: THE POETRY OF MICHAEL TORRES

All levels, 18+. Nationally acclaimed poet Michael Torres lives and writes locally. His book An Incomplete List of Names has gotten a lot of attention in literary circles, and for good reason. It’s a relatable, vivid, and touching collection that “…grapples with the roles that names, hometown, language, and others’ perceptions play on our understanding of ourselves and our worlds. His collection illuminates the artist’s struggle to make sense of the disparate identities others have forced upon him.” Let’s read it together. In our first meeting, we’ll talk about poetry in general. We’ll connect as a group before we start reading the book, to talk about what makes a good poem, and maybe come up with a few guiding thoughts or questions to keep in mind as we read. Then, we’ll regroup in a couple of weeks and talk about his work. Provide your own copy of An Incomplete List of Names (for sale direct from Beacon Press at beacon.org). Min. 3, max. 10.

How do I get my supplies? The day before the class, you can pick up the supplies at the Early Childhood Center entrance (Door V) of the Middle School. This is a no-contact pick-up. Enter the Early Childhood Center doors and locate the supply packets stored in a tub right inside the doors. Your packet will be labeled with your name.

How do I join the class? The day before, we will email you a link to the class. Plan to join the class a few minutes early to make sure your connections work.
