Violin with Master Violin Instructor

Evan Shallcross

Fridays, 2–7 p.m. SPHS Music Practice Room 1

Violinist Evan Shallcross traces his musical beginnings to the sounds of voices, instruments and records he grew up with at home. At nine he began violin study with twin cities musicians Taichi and Robin Chen, and reveled the chance to play in school and extracurricular ensembles.

Evan was fortunate to continue training with teachers Milan Vitek at the Oberlin Conservatory and Syoko Ski at the Yale School of Music, obtaining bachelor and master of music degrees, respectively. Since then he has performed and held positions with major professional orchestras in the United States and abroad, including the New Haven Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, and as concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Hong Kong.

Nurturing a love for small ensemble playing, he co-founded the Hong Kong Chamber Music Collective and the twin cities based Crossroads String Duo. Evan has also been active as a soloist, conductor and composer. In parallel with performance, he has long been passionate about teaching students and ensembles of all ages and levels.

Outside of music, Evan enjoys photography, dance, and learning about social science, physics and philosophy. Cat person.
